The Control Tower is built around one idea: heat should reach the whole load at once rather than cooking the bottom while the top sits cold. The SE pillar gives it the surface to do that, and allows the user to lift that pillar up the Control Tower. It is a deliberate piece of quartz for people who want more control of their hit.
